Tauntauns, Wampas, and Snow

I was casually browsing reddit this evening and happened upon an image of Carrie Fisher from Return of the Jedi. The caption mentioned something about her coke nail, which isn't too shocking since I don't know anyone who honestly survived the 80's without a little help.

Wrong finger, Leia.

This prompted me to do a little homework on the subject. According to The Guardian (not the most reliable news source, but certainly one of the more entertaining), Fisher admitted:
"We did cocaine on the set of [The] Empire [Strikes Back], in the ice planet. I didn't even like coke that much. It was just a case of getting on whatever train I needed to take to get high."
Now, the scenes on the ice planet Hoth are some of my favourite from the trilogy due mostly to Leia's deeply expressive face. She is somehow pensive, pained, concerned, and strangely haughty. She is especially striking in the scenes where she learns that Han is departing to pay his debt and right before he leaves in search of Luke. Now that I find out she was more than likely high, I've got to say it really kind of worked for her. I'm not endorsing drug usage, but I am endorsing Star Wars...and short fingernails.
Fighting your feelings for Han or just experiencing an overwhelming sense of superiority?
It doesn't take much to convince me to begin my next Star Wars marathon, but I just can't wait to play the  who's-high-in-this-scene game next time I do.

Get it, girl.

Canadians are Just Cuter 2

i discovered The Organ in the fall of 2006 while i was going through a major L Word marathon. the band appears in the second season where they are filming a fictional video for their song Brother...and then later the ladies play their cd Grab That Gun at Jenny and Shane's house. now, to say that Kate Sketch is the epitome of androgyny would be to discount the many that came before her, but i think you will see from the video that she is quite the picture of success. the band originates from Vancouver, B.C. my third-favourite Canadian province. on December 7, 2006 The Organ became one of many bands of the year to break my heart...

maybe they aren't that great cuz' wikipedia rumors that Sketch might have slandered the name of Sleater-Kinney. although they are only honorary Canadians and real-life Americans...Sleater-Kinney is still my first-favourite band.

Coffee

"Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death and as sweet as love."
Turkish proverb
This morning I stopped by the new Jittery Joes for a 16oz medium roast coffee (a nice Peruvian palatable) and a fresh everything bagel. I got to thinking that I'm a little ashamed of my relationship with coffee (and her recent guest star: bagel).

I started drinking coffee on a somewhat regular basis when I was about 12 years old. Granted, year 12 WAS a busy one so it's hard to pinpoint exactly why coffee came into my life at such a pivotal moment in the development of what has become...present-day-me. Classes at the middle school I attended began at 7:20 am. That means I would wake up at approximately 6:30 to have breakfast and either catch the bus or be driven to school. And that's not to mention the days when I had 6:00 am swim practice...which implies a 5:30 arousal. JESUS, I can't imagine doing such a thing today. Anyway...this was my introduction to America's favorite stimulant.

I'm typically a medium roast kind of gal...just a splash of cream...no sugar. My grandmother is said to like her coffee the way she likes her men: strong and black. I will occassionally delve into the world of novelty drinks such as those you will pay $5 for at Starbuck's. On that note, I should mention that flavored coffee is reserved only for special occassions and I could really do without.

I work in a grocery store and one of the reccuring mundane conversations I choose to hold with customers is on the topic of coffee preferences. It's really turned into a great pick-up technique and I've got to say that Dunkin'Donuts drinkers have got to be some of the easiest people out there. Sometimes I pick up a bag and the aroma will waft through the small "sniffing holes" provided by the packager. Just another way that coffee reaches out and says "hello..."

In closing this overture to coffee I feel obligated to mention that--although I have dedicated 9 semi-faithful years to the beverage--our relationship is not without conflict. Coffee, I do not appreciate it when you keep me awake at night (because you know I don't enjoy decaf). I resent you for making me too jittery to think when I am hoping that you will only keep me awake long enough to finish a paper. You've stained my clothing and my teeth...and you're no cheap date either. Despite your faults, I love you. I will always have a place for you in my heart and in my cup.

Canadians Are Just Cuter

due to my obsession with all things Canadian, i have decided to start a recurring post of a few of my favourite things from Canada. the posts will include videos of musicians or actors, famous people...things that are mirabulous...and maybe even just some ordinary things that are extraordinary BECAUSE they're from Canada.

let's start off the series with a video from a favorite Canadian band--Land of Talk. things that are beautiful about this band include: female lead vocals and Canadian origins. the band is based out of Montreal (my second-favourite Canadian city) and Elizabeth Powell's voice is quite heartbreaking. the song is "Magnetic Hill."

Sittin' on the Hot Corner

soooo...i guess i just found out about the townies. if i wanted to run into some of my aunt's classmates from the class of '82 this would be the place to do it. i don't care though...i'm holding onto my spot at Hot Corner. it's not like this is the first time i've ever been to Hot Corner but i'm usually in and out. dear-heart, why are you still introducing your live-in as "roommate"? and why did your roommate grab your ass as you sat down just now? you're forty years old...let's admit that maybe you're not a virgin anymore (i won't tell your parents). i'm actually having to make an effort to keep my eyes on the computer screen...these people are fascinating.

maybe if i stay in this town for the next 20 years i'll become "regular" enough to be recognized by every customer in every dank coffee shop in town.

Film Fest Campus Ladies

The ladies are putting together a Chick-Flick marathon. thank you Valerie for coming up with the idea and putting a movie list into action. The tentative list has about 10 films. The marathon is gonna go a little like this:
favourite foods (puttin' on a winter coat)
favourite v-sister films
favourite comfortable pants
favourite vision video...

not only is this just an all-time-favorite, but it is like a love-carnival for some of our favorite actors: Mary-Louise Parker, Mary Stuart Masterson, Jessica Tandy, and Kathy Bates. this is also one of the few movies for which i have mysteriously hallucinated a sexual encounter between the main characters.

this film was chosen as our Cate Blanchette film. the release of Elizabeth: The Golden Age has brought back some very tender memories of the fall of the Roman Catholic church and my broken heart circa 1998.

you don't own me...
this film is packed full of quotable moments. there is also an amazing cameo performance by Ivana Trump where she drops a classic line.
"Ladies, you have to be strong and independent, and remember, don't get mad, get everything."
